how to to mount external USB drive on Ubuntu 22.04 with 'mount: unknown filesystem type' scenarios
I'm trying to debug I'm relatively new to this, so bear with me. After trying multiple solutions online, I still can't figure this out... I'm trying to mount an external USB drive on my Ubuntu 22.04 system, but I'm working with the behavior `mount: unknown filesystem type 'vfat'`. I've verified that the drive is connected and can be seen with `lsblk`, and it shows up as `/dev/sdb1`. When I run the command `sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/usb`, I get the aforementioned behavior message. To troubleshoot, I checked the output of `dmesg | tail -n 20` right after plugging in the USB drive, which shows the following: ``` [ 1234.567890] usb 1-1.3: new high-speed USB device number 5 using xhci_hcd [ 1234.678901] usb-storage 1-1.3:1.0: USB Mass Storage device detected [ 1234.789012] scsi host6: usb-storage 1-1.3:1.0 [ 1235.890123] scsi 6:0:0:0: Direct-Access Generic USB Flash Disk 8.07 PQ: 0 ANSI: 2 [ 1235.901234] sd 6:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg2 type 0 [ 1235.912345] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] 12345678 512-byte logical blocks: (6.34 GB/5.90 GiB) [ 1235.923456] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] Write Protect is off [ 1235.934567] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] No Caching mode page found [ 1235.945678] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through ``` I also tried installing `dosfstools` and running `sudo fsck.vfat /dev/sdb1`, but it reported no errors. The drive was formatted on a Windows machine using FAT32. I’ve tried different USB ports and even different USB drives, but I keep working with the same scenario. Any advice on how to resolve this or what additional diagnostics I can perform would be appreciated. I'm working on a CLI tool that needs to handle this. This is my first time working with Bash 3.9. I'm open to any suggestions. Has anyone else encountered this?
