mysql json performance indexing sql

I've searched everywhere and can't find a clear answer. I'm stuck on something that should probably be simple. I'm working with important performance degradation when querying a table with a large JSON column. The table has over a million rows, and the JSON field is around 2KB on average. I am trying to filter results based on specific keys in the JSON data, but the execution time is excessive. For instance, I have the following query: ```sql SELECT * FROM my_table WHERE JSON_EXTRACT(json_column, '$.key1') = 'value1'; ``` When I run this query, it takes several seconds to complete. I've tried adding an index on the JSON column like this: ```sql ALTER TABLE my_table ADD INDEX idx_key1 ((JSON_EXTRACT(json_column, '$.key1'))); ``` However, the performance didn't improve significantly. I also experimented with using `JSON_UNQUOTE` and changing the data type of the JSON column to a VARCHAR, but it led to errors while inserting records that contain valid JSON. My table structure is as follows: ```sql CREATE TABLE my_table ( id INT AUTO_INCREMENT PRIMARY KEY, json_column JSON NOT NULL ); ``` I suspect that the use of JSON data types is causing index inefficiency, but I want to know if there's a better approach or any specific configurations in MySQL 8.0 that could help optimize these queries. Any insights or best practices would be greatly appreciated. This is part of a larger API I'm building. What am I doing wrong?
