PowerShell 7.3 - guide with Concurrent Execution of Background Jobs and Variable Scope
Quick question that's been bugging me - I'm performance testing and I'm trying to run a script that processes a large number of files concurrently using PowerShell's background jobs feature..... However, I'm working with issues with variable scope and variable values not being as expected when the jobs complete. Here's a simplified version of what I'm doing: ```powershell $files = Get-ChildItem -Path 'C:\Data\Files' -Filter '*.txt' $jobs = @() foreach ($file in $files) { $jobs += Start-Job -ScriptBlock { param($filePath) # Simulate processing Start-Sleep -Seconds 2 return Get-Content -Path $filePath | Measure-Object -Word } -ArgumentList $file.FullName } # Wait for all jobs to complete $jobs | Wait-Job # Attempt to retrieve results $results = $jobs | Receive-Job # Output results $results ``` When I execute this script, the `$results` variable is populated, but it only contains the output from the last job. I've tried using `Write-Host` inside the job to debug, and it seems like the jobs are running correctly, but when I get the results, they're not what I expected. Additionally, I get the following warning when I run `Receive-Job`: ``` Receive-Job : The job has not finished running yet. ``` I suspect this might be related to how I'm handling the variable scope within the jobs. Is there a proper way to ensure that each job returns its own results without overwriting previous ones? Also, is there a better practice for managing the collection of results from multiple jobs? Any insights would be appreciated! My development environment is Windows 11. What's the best practice here? I'm using Powershell 3.9 in this project. How would you solve this? This is my first time working with Powershell 3.10. I'm open to any suggestions.
