Rails 7.1: Trouble with API Rate Limiting and Caching Responses in a Background Job
I'm building a feature where I'm refactoring my project and I'm not sure how to approach This might be a silly question, but I'm currently working on a Rails 7.1 application where I'm trying to implement API rate limiting for a third-party service. The API allows 100 requests per hour and I've set up a background job using ActiveJob and Sidekiq to handle the requests. However, I'm running into issues with caching the responses of the API calls to avoid unnecessary requests. I've configured my background job like this: ```ruby class FetchDataJob < ApplicationJob queue_as :default def perform response = Rails.cache.fetch('api_response', expires_in: 1.hour) do make_api_call end handle_response(response) end private def make_api_call HTTParty.get('https://api.example.com/data', headers: { 'Authorization' => 'Bearer your_token' }) end def handle_response(response) if response.success? # Process the response else Rails.logger.behavior("API call failed: #{response.code} #{response.message}") end end end ``` However, when I run the job, I'm seeing that the cached response does not get utilized after the first call, leading to a flood of requests to the API. The logs show `API call failed: 429 Too Many Requests` when the limit is hit. I've tried using `Rails.cache.exist?('api_response')` before making the call to check if the response is cached, but it seems that the caching is not working as expected. I also verified that the cache store is set to `:memory_store` in `config/environments/development.rb`. What could be going wrong here? Does anyone have experience with properly caching API responses in background jobs and handling rate limits effectively? Any insights would be greatly appreciated! Has anyone else encountered this?
